Jan Verwoert is a Berlin-based critic and writer on contemporary art and cultural theory. His writings have appeared in various magazines, anthologies, and monographs. He teaches at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. He is the author and editor of several works, including No New Kind of Duck - Would I Know How to Say What I Do?(Diaphanes & UdK Graduate School, Zurich-Berlin 2016), co-authored with Daniel Pies: What if It Won't Stop Here? (Archive Books & UdK Graduate School, Berlin 2018), and with Polys Peslikas: Umm Kulthum Faints on Stage (Sternberg Press, Berlin and Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture 2020). In an effort to formulate alternatives to representation critique that remains fixed on the level of representation, his current research focuses on those areas in art, thought, and interpersonal and social relationships where the visible and the represented border on and engage with the invisible—questioning, thinking, and feeling its presence.
