Helena Julian

Helena Julian is an independent curator and writer based in Amsterdam. Her background in art history and critical theory informs her focus on performance studies. She is committed to artistic practices that connect performativity, language, and social context. She writes for art and culture magazines including Metropolis M, Mister Motley, and Frieze, and works as co-editor-in-chief of the music culture publication zweikommasieben. Her recent projects and writings examine how contemporary artists reflect or resist the cultural and social contexts that shape their work, and how performativity is enacted and valued in contemporary art. She often works closely with artists to develop and contextualize new performative and interdisciplinary works. She has worked as an advisor for the Mondriaan Fonds since 2025.
As a guest-in-residence of TEMPORARS SUSCH in February 2025, Helena is taking part in a weekend of inquiry. Together with resident author Noemi Smolik we will go into a winterly journey of shared thinking about art.
