Brit Barton

Brit Barton graduated from the University of Chicago, Department of Visual Art (MFA thesis advisors: William Pope.L and Matthew Jesse Jackson, Ph.D.). She is the winner of the 2024 Swiss Art Award Critique, Publishing, and Edition category for her attempt to expand art criticism, both formally and structurally. Her proposal for this, The Sitting Ovation, which is unfolding in 2025 and allowing her to expand her writing on contemporary art, to slow down its process, to experiment with new forms of criticism and to work collaboratively with others in the field: other writers, but also artists, curators, and administrators. Barton is an accomplished writer with a compelling style that speaks to the urgency to rethink art criticism and writes regularly for frieze, Spike, Mousse, Texte zur Kunst e.a. She is a visiting critic at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste and a teaching fellow at the University of Chicago, department of Visual Arts. Also, Barton is the founder of Relative Press, an independent publishing house.


As a guest-in-residence of TEMPORARS SUSCH in June 2025, Becca is taking part in a weekend of exchanges. Together with resident author Kirsty Bell we will go into a summerly journey of shared thinking about art and beyond.
